Gareth Southgate believes more English players will follow the example of Jadon Sancho and Kieran Trippier in moving abroad to European leagues.
Sancho left Manchester City to join Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and has since become a star in the Bundesliga.
Trippier, meanwhile, joined LaLiga heavyweights Atletico Madrid in the close season, after he was deemed surplus to requirements at Tottenham.
There has been an uptick in the amount of English players moving abroad to further their development in recent seasons, and Southgate has no doubt the success Sancho in particular has achieved in Germany will continue to inspire England hopefuls in testing themselves across the continent.
I think it is brilliant for the perspective of playing out of the country, i…
Paris Saint-Germain winger Lucas Moura doesn’t seem to be worried by the increased competition for places at Parc des Princes.
The Brazilian was an important member of the team last term, starting 29 Ligue 1 games and scoring 12 goals, but his status has since changed.
With both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar joining, Lucas Moura only made two substitute appearances this term, and many believed he would be looking for a way out.
However, speaking after the goalless draw with Montpellier, the 25-year-old made it clear that he was happy to stay at Parc des Princes.
“Staying here, I knew it was going to be difficult, but it’s a challenge for me. I am part of the group,” Moura told Le Parisien.
“I will work hard to take advantage of the opportuni…
Manchester City made light of their defensive crisis as Fernandinho filled in adeptly at centre-back and captained the Premier League champions to a 3-0 victory over his former club Shakhtar Donetsk.
Hampered by the absences of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte due to injury, City boss Pep Guardiola named Fernandinho alongside Nicolas Otamendi at the heart of his defence and was able to celebrate a clean sheet despite the odd shaky moment.
Riyad Mahrez scored his first goal of the season to settle City s nerves after 24 minutes and his interplay with Ilkay Gundogan produced the visitors best moments at Metalist Stadium.
Gundogan, ably assisted by Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, ran the show from midfield and surged forward at every opportunity, getting himself on the s…
Petr Cech feels Arsenal have forgotten what it takes to win the Premier League title.
The Gunners last lifted the trophy in the 2003-04 season and failed to qualify for the Champions League in the last two campaigns, with Arsene Wenger s long reign ending in May.
Cech has four Premier League titles, all from his time at Chelsea before he moved across London to join Arsenal in 2015.
And the veteran, who is keeping new goalkeeper Bernd Leno out of the team, called for Unai Emery s men to recapture the club s former glories by grinding out results.
For any club who wins titles in the recent years, you have a team with the knowhow how to finish it off and you can see it in any sport, Cech said.
I take Tiger Woods – five years since he won a majo…
Pep Guardiola lauded Riyad Mahrez s appetite for the big occasion after the Manchester City winger s brace secured a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain and a place in the Champions League final.
Mahrez s free-kick sealed a 2-1 win at Parc des Princes in last week s first leg and he netted a goal in each half on Tuesday to close out a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
The former Leicester City favourite has found the going tough at times since joining City in 2018 but he is now a go-to pick for Guardiola, his four goals and two assists in this season s competition putting the club one game away from elusive Champions League glory.
Riyad is an extraordinary player – big talent, huge quality, especially in the big games he is always ready, City manager Guardiola told a post-m…
Two goals in 58 first-half seconds from Etienne Capoue and Roberto Pereyra saw Watford triumph 2-0 at Wolves, ending the hosts impressive run of form.
Wolves had won four of their last five Premier League games, while Watford had only picked up one point in four, but a surprise result on Saturday saw Watford leapfrog Nuno Espirito Santo s side into seventh place.
The previous eight of Wolves Premier League goals had been scored in the second half, yet they were unable to force a late fightback this time around in a lacklustre display.
After a nondescript opening 20 minutes in the first-ever Premier League meeting between the sides, a quickfire Watford double saw the game burst into life.

Pep Guardiola believes Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz had the quality to play for Manchester City, who were frustrated previously in their efforts to secure a work permit for the Brazilian.
Douglas Luiz was on City s books from 2017 to 2019 but was forced to go out on loan to Girona in consecutive seasons before sealing a reported £15million switch to Villa.
Guardiola spoke of his disappointment at failing to get the midfielder a permit in 2018, when City were short on options to cover Fernandinho.
The Premier League champions have since signed Rodri, although he is out injured, and Guardiola suggested there could still be the option for Douglas Luiz to return to City in the future.
He would be here if the work permit had been possible, Guardiola …
Pep Guardiola believes he missed something at Manchester City last season, not least in failing to field Fabian Delph at left-back.
The Premier League leaders head to Crystal Palace on Sunday, where victory would extend their record-breaking winning run in the top-flight to 19 matches – the same as the Bundesliga best Guardiola established with Bayern Munich in 2013-14 – and open up a 16-point advantage over second-place Chelsea.
It is a far cry from the former Barcelona coach s debut season in England, where City only made sure of Champions League qualification in the final round of fixtures and finished trophyless.
Guardiola bolstered his squad, with more than £200million spent on new first-team arrivals before the start of the current campaign, but only …
Carlo Ancelotti has stressed that form counts for little amid the “special tension” of a Madrid derby as Real and Atletico prepare to clash at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday.
The two sides head into the game on the back of contrasting fortunes, with Ancelotti’s Real having reeled off five straight wins to kick off the LaLiga season as well as getting their Champions League campaign under way with victory over Union Berlin.
Atletico, meanwhile, limp into the game still shellshocked by goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s late equaliser for Lazio in their midweek Champions League clash, which swiftly followed their 3-0 domestic loss at Valencia last week.

Carlo Ancelotti says he feels lucky to coach Real Madrid, and claimed that former Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho can make history at Roma.
Ancelotti s Madrid side clinched a dramatic 3-2 win over Sevilla on Sunday to move 15 points clear at the top of LaLiga, and seem all but certain to be crowned champions with second-placed Barcelona having just eight games to play.
Madrid have also advanced from thrilling Champions League ties against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in the second half of the campaign, and will face Manchester City for a place in European football s showpiece event.
Ancelotti left Everton to join Madrid for a second spell in charge, and is thrilled with how his return has unfolded so far.
